Welcome to Monday ~ 21 May 2012

Welcome to Monday feminausts. I hope you’ve all had lovely weekends. I got to meet my new niece on Saturday! Such a gorgeous little smush-face.

I hope you enjoy the selection on feminist news we’ve found for you. Please don’t shoot the messenger, but if you feel like responding to anything we’ve posted send it through to info@feminaust.org.

‘She Who Must Not Be Named’ Award

This week’s award goes to John Scalzi, who explains male privilege in a very accessible way… Straight White Male: The Lowest Difficulty Setting There Is. Share it wide and far with your friends who just don’t ‘get’ what those ‘feminists’ are always on about.

Cashed up

blue milk discusses money and relationships.

the fcollective brings together sweet-as feminist analysis of the federal budget for us.

Body-conscious

Tyra Banks writes an open letter supporting Vogue’s eating disorder mandate.

Jezebel discusses all the slut-shaming Rihanna’s had to put up with recently.

blue milk introduces us to Milk Junkies, a transgendered dad who was determined to breastfeed his baby.

Beauty Beat at the Age asks if women can ever be too old for make up… and I’m pretty sure ‘giving up’ on make up has very little to do with women getting depression, unless it’s depression induced by only being valued for what they look like…

HAIR! not the musical. A blog post on one woman’s experience of ditching her “Gillette Multi-Blade Princess Goddess Sexy Miracle Razor with Aloe Vera and added Moisturizers” and opting for fuzz instead. Gloriously funny!

Power trips

Kasey Edwards, at Daily Life, discusses the power of putting another woman down.

And more on women… or is it men… hell bent on putting each other down.

The Daily Life asks if tabloids really hate women.

Feminist actions!

Young UN Women Australia – Melbourne Committee are hosting a High Tea to honour women in leadership and raise money for the Fiji Floods Appeal - this Saturday at Cristina Re in Collingwood, Melbourne. IsBambi will be one of the guest speakers! You can buy your tickets from here.

The Equality Rights Alliance’s website, Settle Petal, gets a shout-out from the fcollective.

    • Yay! That one came to us thanks to a friend of a friend in the UK. Kept my tandem pilot and I giggling for a good 20 minutes during a bad moment of despair outside Glasgow. Glad you enjoyed it. xxx
