Welcome to Monday ~ 17 October 2011

Monday, Monday, Monday. For what purpose do you exist? To annoy me? to emphasis how good the weekend is in comparison? Anyway. I reject you.

Here are the latest links! A sampling of the random things that we have come across this week. Remember that we aim to provide a good cross section of the various discussions of the week; we do not necessarily endorse or reject any of these views!

Panther Award!

Signed up yet?? Feminists are better in bed! Plus you might get to speed date the feminausts!

And of course the awesome Feminist Ryan Gosling tumble.

Sex Work

“If we choose it, it means we have power”; a sex workers eloquent reaction to the depiction of her industry in the South Australian press.

bitchmedia is running a series of articles from current and former sex workers; here’s the first.

Ryy has a post up responding to a recent Four Corners program on sex slavery, and how it perpetuated whorephobia and rascism.

Charlotte Shane on the camaraderie among sex workers, and how destructive internal divisions and rifts can be.

I’ve not found any writing in favor of the Four Corner’s report last week; if you’ve written one, please send us the links for the next round up! If you’re respectful and legitimately trying to engage in the debate, we’ll link ya.

Kansas is facing a serious budget crisis. So the Topeka City Council voted to repeal the law against domestic violence. On what planet is this acceptable? Domestic battery is still illegal under state law, but the district attorneys office is outta money to prosecute; so batterers will simply be held for 72 hours. Ps its Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Which maybe why the district attorney declared that he will continue to prosecute cases (woot!)

Men have a huge role to play in the fight for gender equality; but Mia doesn’t think that means that straight, white males are actually oppressed……

Dr Pepper don’t want us sissy women drinking their product. So much for the rationality of the market…..(first link via The Beheld.)

The Young Women’s Political Leadership Program in New York is about to start.

The equipment of an Afghani policewoman.

Have changing economic and social conditions consigned traditional marriage to the dustbin? And what it means for women if marriage is no longer our fundamental aim in life.

The conservative British PM wants women to be able to succeed to the throne. Or inherit something. Or something that I didn’t really pay that much attention to but seems important…..

Condoms are icky, the Pill makes you fat; and Cat’s pissed that all the pharmacies in New York are out of the morning after pill .Jill thinks such opinions are slightly concerning coming from the HEALTH EDITOR of a major internet website.  Jill commends Cat for her honesty, but get stuck into her for suggesting that her experiences hold true for all women. Read the original here, but i take NO responsibility for how pissed off you get.

White writers, fiction, and the acknowledgement of racism.

Amber Miller ran a marathon, and the same day gave birth. Cos she’s awesome.  My reaction was, “holy crap is it safe to run a marathon when you are 39 weeks pregnant?” Turns out it is and I’m way too inclined to buy into that idea that pregnant women are fragile and made of spun glass. Miller makes me think that pregnancy gives one superpowers!

Self-consciousness, the Gaze, and the freaking minefield of trying to discuss appearance.

So did you guys know that without make up, women aren’t taken seriously? Wait a minute…

“Women need to let men be men”. Oh, men of America, you are all pussies. And feminism made you that way.

Feminists have invaded podcasting-land. Ms Elouise is especially obsessed with this one.

There’s an exhibit about feminism Down Under in the 1970s, on in Melbourne at the moment. Check out this review.

Homosexual couples can get married in Nepal, Paraguay and South Africa, but not Australia? Mike Rann, premier of South Australia thinks this is nonsense. Wish he’d done some more for the issue before he was about to step down, but whatever, applause for putting it on the agenda.

The top employers for women in Australia. Self-employment comes in at number two…..

A report on motherhood based on facts and science. Freaky.

Great article on how scientific papers about “femininity” often do not account for sociological factors, and ascribe behaviors only to genetics or biological causes.

Speaking of, have you ever wondered if you were maternal enough to be a women? Science has.

The Pill has effects beyond birth control. I know for the women in my family, going on the Pill equals going up a cup size. Win! But there are more serious, and increasingly measured, consequences too.

Scientific proof that the cultural objectification of women actually creates male minds that can’t see those women as actual humans.

Enjoy,  kiddos! And remember to keep sending in the great links!

About AimlessPanther

I’ve just moved back to my hometown, Melbourne, after getting engaged. This means searching for a job. I’ve got a PhD in something fairly useless; some customer experience history; and a few years under my belt as a public servant all-rounder. So basically, I have no specialty, don’t qualify for entry-level roles, and am a little afraid I’m going to end up back in an outbound call center…… “Hi, this is Dr Panther. Do you have a moment to discuss your current mobile phone plan?” Given I recall job searching as second only to the pain of wisdom teeth removal, I decided I needed an area to vent and try and turn the experience into a fun story. If I let the crazy out here, then my future employers will just get the professional, awesome version of Aimless Panther, right?
