Welcome to Monday ~ 7 May 2012

Welcome to Monday feminausts! I hope you’ve had a lovely weekend and have been able to keep warm as winter creeps in on us. I’ve had a pretty sleep-free week due to jet-lag (or I’m just generally developing insomnia) so please excuse me if some of what I write doesn’t make any sense to you!

‘She Who Must Not Be Named’ Award

Rosalle Scolari interviewed a bunch of people to find out how feminist men are viewed – friends or foes? It can be scary to invite feminist or pro-feminist men into the feminist & women’s rights movement, but I think an important step towards gender equality. Go Rosalle!

General commentary

A response to Mona Elthaway’s recent article about the Arab world hating women.

Maha Atal writes in Forbes, that sex isn’t only a woman’s issue and therefore Foreign Policy magazine shouldn’t have said it was!

Tom Cummings muses on how ‘gay marriage’ isn’t a thing.

Women’s ‘stuff’

Jezebel asks, ‘where’s our manic, pixie dream guy?’

Oh and watch out for your vaginas, they are mysteriously full of bacteria.

Family planning

Parenting is surely a learning curve, and changes your priorities – i.e. keeping sporn alive trumps sleep-ins on the weekend. But, it does not make you a superior leader.

Newsflash – women don’t wait to be happy, THEY ARE!

The South Australian upper house has passed a bill allowing lesbian couples and single women to access IVF – YIPEEEEEEEEE. Yo go SA!

And to reiterate the point – motherhood does not equal the totality of a woman’s (over the age of 30) happiness.

Clem Baston saw a subtle pro-life film and her blood did not curdle!

Here is a link to a Pro-Choice News Roundup. Fingers crossed we see some positive stories some time soon, not just those shit ones that make us angry!

Mobilisation

Jezebel has more to ask, like ‘are women’s magazines the key to more women’s writers?’ – i.e. is it critical mass that we want or critical feminists (en masse)?

Ladies & Gents in Perth, march in Slut Walk!

Rio +20 is gonna be huge, and here’s why we should have plenty of ladies attend.

Here is coverage of the American ‘Unite Against the War on Women’ Rally that was held in Los Angeles on 28 April.
