Welcome to Monday ~ 25th June 2012

Who had a good weekend? I had a great weekend, although not as good as last weekend when I managed to grow abs from laughing too much, get accused of being a serial killer and join a band! Yes, it was a busy busy weekend.

I got to hang out with this lighthouse here for a bit (and there’s a cookie for anyone who can guess where it is) and some amazing people.

When I was in Turkey in April I met an Iranian woman who I chatted to about life and love and family. She found it very difficult to understand why I was so uncommitted to having children and a biological family. For her, family was everything. I tried to explain to her that for me too, family is everything, my parents and my brother and all my aunts and uncles and cousins are the most important people in the world to me. But, that I have another family too. A day to day family, the family I cook for and cry with and stay up all night watching bad movies or getting drunk on the porch with, who automatically know they can come and hang on my couch when things get shit and who know there’s always beer in the fridge for anyone who needs it. This is what a friend of mine refers to as logical family and that’s something that really resonates with me. So this week, in honour of a great weekend (both last weekend and the one just gone and the many many before that and those still to come) this weeks Welcome to Monday is dedicated to my logical family and is full of girl love and specialness. Enjoy dearest feminausts.

Female Friendship YAY!!!

I think one of the biggest problems we face with female representation is the Smurfette Principle. If you didn’t watch The Smurfs as a kid, the basic idea is that there’s this village of blue dudes and one of them’s smart, one of them’s dorky, one of them’s moody – and one of them’s a girl.

Most of my friends are girls (I’ve talked about this before on feminaust so I won’t bore you with the details) and most of my friends are AWESOME, actually, all of them, I wouldn’t be friends with them otherwise. One of the reasons I had such an amazing weekend last week was because I was away with my girlfriends, some of them old, some of them new and all of them totally, utterly, completely, awesome. Let’s remember to EMBRACE the girl love, and thank our lovely lady friends for their ever loving presence in our lives. And if your lady friends aren’t as amazing as this, ditch them and get a new bunch coz seriously, you’re missing out.

Options for change!

Why women still can’t have it all and what we need to do to change that.

An oldie but a goodie, Germaine Greer on why change is a feminist issue.

And one on how climate change is a feminist issue.

A petition for more women to take on prominent roles within the US presidential campaign. Interesting concept.

Girl Love

Big girls need love too! Dating while fat and feminist.

Getting over girl hate.

Lesbian Bromance is here… apparently

We don’t really care though, we just wanna kick back, watch the game History Channel, and give some hugs. You know; like we own the place.
