Welcome to Monday ~ 8 October 2012

Welcome to Monday feminausts!

A march featuring 30,000 people was held down Sydney Road last weekend (30 Sept) to pay respects to Jill Meagher. An overwhelming and hugely significant day for everyone impacted by her death – if anyone would like to share their story of the march with us we’d love to hear from you (info@feminaust.org).

More recently, I hope you all had a lovely weekend and managed to get some rays of sun. Even though the wind was icy cold down here in Melbourne I got to wash my sheets and then dry them outside! Totally exciting.

On much more exciting news (what’s more exciting than clean sheets, I hear you ask) Right Now (an organisation run by young people to provide a platform for engaging Australians in human rights) has spent the last month celebrating women’s rights and has a TRUCK LOAD of great articles for you to read concerning feminism, Australia and women’s rights. Also, I had my rant ‘What, do you mean I still need to call myself a feminist?’ published alongside all of the excellent material.

‘She Who Must Not Be Named’ Award

There’s not much more that I like at the moment than when Clem Ford gets her (very eloquent) rant on at the Daily Life. Last week she wrote about how society polices young women’s sexuality and after reading it I wanted to throw a pro-masturbation party to celebrate. But what food to serve?

Activism

Reclaim the Night is happening on Sydney Road, Melbourne on 20 October at 7:30pm. More details here.

Manal Al Sharif is a women’s rights activist in Saudi Arabia making waves in her quest to expand the human rights of women (written by Eman-Al-Nafjan).

Check out this awesome photo project run by a young Australian woman across the Pacific Region. And here’s the FB page. Get involved feminausts!

Sex + Misogyny

Sady Doyle‘s ‘Welcome to Planet A-Hole’ discusses the page on facebook ’12 year old sluts meme’. Yeah, it’s pretty fucking depressing.

Martin Robbins writes about Page 3 of The Sun (UK) and its particular brand of misogyny. However, he doesn’t believe banning it is the solution, rather that we should quite our sex-shaming and increase the diversity of boobs on view.

Identity

blue milk turns our attention to how femininity has become a brand.

In case you’re getting fed up with this feminism shit – here’s a way to undo it, read Raising Boys that Feminists Hate. Excellent review by Kasey Edwards.

Bullies

A Morning News Anchor hits back at a bully who called her fat, and she totally owns him, on television!

Tara Moss has written a fantastic opinion piece in light of her appearance on the FODI panel ‘All Women Hate Each Other’ which states that no, it’s more likely that men are the mean ones (statistically speaking).

SlamPow Productions has created a film about street harassment but switched the gender of the characters. It’s actually pretty funny watching these women attempting to be vulgar.
