Welcome to Monday! ~ 11th March 2013

295693_531129076927390_632451772_nWell I don’t know where in the world you are right now, but I’m sitting in my unit in Melbourne where we’ve been sweltering under over 30 degrees + for the last week and it looks like we will be for the week to come. The BOM states that Melbourne’s average daily maximum temperature for March so far has been 32 degrees. Ouch!

I retreated to my parents house with the dogs for a few days to enjoy the air conditioning and to raid their pantry (which was pretty bare) but now I’m back in the steamy comfort of my own home, ready to talk the week that was. Enjoy the links lovelies and don’t shoot the messenger! xxx

Pony Award

Vandana Shiva on capitalist patriarchy and violence against women. Just sit back and enjoy the joy of listening to an amazing speaker and beautiful intellect and a feminist.

Women in Leadership

860064_10152842526495107_1105395219_oThe case against quotas. For the record, I am very, very, very PRO quotas. I think that the only way to break down the substantial social and cultural barriers to getting women into positions of leadership is to firstly just get them there, the barriers that exist are primarily upheld by those people who ARE in power and leadership and the gently gently approach just doesn’t work. You can read my views on quotas here. I would like to draw your attention to one comment that I feels warrants further exploration. In this article the author mentions that 4 of her 200 subjects DID agree with quotas and that these four were all from human resources backgrounds…. so the people who understand and appreciate the “merit based” approach perhaps the best are the ones who also see its greatest failings… interesting.

CSW57 is ON and of course my fav organisation YWCA is over there doing it’s thang! Advocacy at CSW is super important and here is why.

Power

Consent is about power. Rape is about power. Those with power vs those without power.

Filomena from the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement talks about the restrictions put in place on demonstrating in her home country and how she overcame one of those restrictions.

How about we teach men not to rape instead of arming women with firearms… CRAZY!!!

“New” feminism

An exerpt from Sexy Feminism. I started readying this with a great deal of scepticism. Mostly because it right off the bat labeled make-up as the domain only of women. It did redeem itself somewhat by mentioning how trans-women use makeup to their advantage but it failed to make any mention of the possibility that men, who identify as male might enjoy makeup. Problematic view in my opinion.

Even the Queen wants gay rights and gender equality these days!

Can a privileged, wealthy, powerful woman hand down advice on dealing with the everyday struggles of success, momentum and career for you and me?

Man

Everyone can love football, wherever you’re from, as long as you’re a man.

Tired Now

Sexism fatigue is when Seth Macfarlane is an arse and you don’t even notice.

ALSO, sign this petition to end child marriage. Because children shouldn’t be having children, a girls first sexual experience shouldn’t be rape by her new husband and girls have the human right to marry who and when they choose. OR not to marry at all.

Abortion

Sometimes it’s funny.

Sometimes it’s fucking serious and this is a great example of how some organisations are doing an amazing job of helping women to access this essential service, even when they live in places where it’s REALLY REALLY HARD. Like Queensland.

Children by Choice put their money (or your money) where it’s needed most. If you care about women’s access to abortion services consider donating to the Children by Choice Women’s Access Fund and help support their great work.
