Stock up on beer, wine and spirits made by female-run brands at this new online bottle store
“To do what [women] only have one day per year? Jenny Cheng asks, recalling a conversation she had with her friend and now business partner Bree Nicholls on International Women’s Day in March 2021. “Why not 365?”
At the time, that was just a throwaway commentary, but it sparked an idea that has grown into Sip’er, a new women-focused bottle store that offers wines, beers and spirits made by women. amazing women around the world.
“When we started researching products for the site, there were so many brands that we knew and loved, but didn’t even recognize that women made them,” says Cheng. “We have tasted every product. The site is so personal to us, and we wanted to make it easy to understand and say these [producers’] stories in an accessible way.
The pressure for greater representation of women beverage producers has increased in recent years. Sip’er follows Joans of Marc, a wine subscription pack run by a woman by Alysha Moscatt and Lucy Kendall, who run the Gippsland Allevare wine brand. This isn’t to say these products are good just because women make them, but to help educate customers about female talent in the beverage industry, so you can choose to support whatever. ‘they will create in the future.
Sip’er’s online store has around 30 Australian brands, divided into categories such as ‘something bold’ and ‘something fancy’. You’ll find beers from Adelaide’s Sparkke, wine from Brave New Wine in Western Australia, and spirits from Tassie’s Taylor & Smith Distilling Co. industry in general. . Wine Australia estimates that only 38 percent of people employed in the industry are women. And if you consider the number of women in leadership positions, that figure drops to 10%.
“Our background is not related to alcohol, we just know what we like to drink and want to make it easy for people to find something they will enjoy,” says Nicholls. “The goal is to encourage people to try something different, to discover new brands, while providing women with well-deserved recognition. ”
For Cheng and Nicholls, Sip’er is about celebrating the stories of each creator. “I really want to have the chance to interview Melly Barajas Cárdenas,” says Nicholls – for Sip’er’s Her Story section, which features the women designers behind the products they sell. “She makes these amazing tequilas in recycled coke bottles, and the entire team at La Gritona is made up of local women.”
Sip’er ships nationwide.
